In the safety industry, leaders have become increasingly aware of workforce changes, particularly with the age mix and finding safety solutions that work for multiple generations. However, age is not the only factor in workforce diversity. More women are joining fields like construction and heavy manufacturing, bringing new safety considerations.
One critical challenge is personal protective equipment (PPE). Media attention has highlighted the importance of well-fitted gear for reducing risks, yet PPE designed for women often lacks proper functionality. The “shrink and pink” trend—where PPE for women is based more on stereotypes than science—does not provide adequate protection, leading to supply gaps for women in critical roles. As any ergonomist knows, tailoring equipment to the worker is essential for safety plans. Just as employers are accommodating multigenerational workforces, they must also adapt to changing gender demographics.
This topic is explored in the latest episode of the DORN Injury Prevention Academy Podcast, featuring guest Sally Morse. Sally, an entrepreneur and advocate for skilled trade workers, co-founded Spectra Supply, a company that produces work gloves tailored to meet the unique needs of every worker. She is also a founding member of the Alliance of Women’s Safety Apparel Manufacturers, which promotes awareness and access to safety products and PPE designed specifically for women. As Sally explains in the podcast, employees perform at their best when they feel comfortable, safe, and supported by their organizations.
In this episode, host Cheryl Roy and Sally Morse discuss:
- The growing need for well-fitted PPE for women in industrial, construction, and other high-exertion fields, and why “shrink-and-pink” is not enough.
- The importance of raising awareness among employers and safety leaders about PPE and safety support for women in the workforce.
- Sally’s advice for entrepreneurs, safety professionals, and advocates on expanding their networks, including opportunities at ASSP 2025.
